The first day of Songkran is National Elderly Day. There are many rituals at schools at temples… children pay respect to older people pouring fragrant water into the elders’ palms as a gesture of humility.
Most of Thais will visit the temple to “Baht the Buddha image” pouring water over Buddha statues. Songkran is also a great occasion to have fun and playing water fights in the entire country. April is the hottest month of the year and Songkran still represents the celebration of the beginning of the rainy season for the agriculture. During Songkran most companies, bank, government offices shut down for more than one week; most of Thais travel back to their homes to enjoy one of the most colorful and festive times of the year.
Songkran, is well known by foreigners as the water festival but many do not know that this is a very important cultural event in Thailand. This is the occasion for re-unions, the occasion for visiting temples and spending time with the family.
In Thailand this festivity is celebrated on the 13th and 14th of April but in the North of Thailand the water fights last more then 10 days !! Visiting Phuket in these days is the best occasion to get together with the local people and enjoy splashing water.
